Lonely as a northern wind twisting through the grass
Or a mare’s tail stringing cross the sky as clouds go racing past
As a lake bed withers ‘neath the sun, the soil too dry to last
very much longer
God I’m not strong when I’m this lonely
And I’m lonely like that

It’s the sound of empty canyons when a strong nor’easter blows
Empty arms around a lover when there’s no one there to hold
Hungry aching waves that break inside a heart too weak to last
very much longer
God I’m not strong and I’m so lonely
Oh God, I’m lonely like that

Friends all tell me I can make it, and I tell myself to pray
That if I dig a little deeper, I will find the strength to stay
Maybe tomorrow things’ll change – yeah, maybe then there’ll be a way
To make it better. I’ll feel better, one of these days.
And until then I’ll just be lonely, lonely like that

I’ll be lonely as a northern wind twisting through the grass
Lonely as a mare’s tail stringing cross the sky as clouds go racing past
And as a lake bed withers ‘neath the sun, the soil too dry to last
very much longer
I’m just not strong when I’m this lonely
And you know, I’m lonely like that
